I use some language models for various small things, I’m definitely not a big fan of them, but I find utility here and there. The psychological ramifications of this technology scare me. I’ve made a point to be very vocal with the people I care about in life to help them understand what these models really are. They are not artificial intelligence, they are at best virtual intelligence and otherwise better called “word calculators”.

One point that I keep seeing with these types of articles is that the person affected has “no history of mental illness”, who is someone “normal”, and often “intelligent”. Pay attention to your loved ones because in the late hours of the night they may be forming very real relationships with very real feelings with these pseudo-intelligent machine personalities. https://mastodon.social/users/kashhill/statuses/115011576505782614
