My original #playstation that I've had since high school seems to have a failing disc drive, so I couldn't say no to this cheap find at #savers thrift store (a New England chain that I no longer have access to since I live in New York now).

It even came with a free copy of #grandtheftauto3 (more likely, an enployee at Savers forgot to check for a disc or didn't care about pulling it to sell seperately)! Sure, it's a PS2 game so it won't work on a PSX and I already have two copies of it, but why not?

Also, LOL at the #thrillkill sticker. I'm keeping that on it, for sure.

I recently started playing The Alters. Haven't gotten super far yet. Just re-cased my PC and was testing things to make sure everything was good. Saw my CPU (AMD 7600X, 105w TDP) was hitting 90c. Eep. Realized the new case fans were all 3 pin, so no PWM. Bought all new 4pin case fans and installed them. Tested again.. still 90c. Wtf?

Didn't think the thermal paste was an issue, but I also didn't have any more so I bought some Duronaut. Pulled the heatsink today after the paste arrived and I'll be damned if it wasn't dry. Barely a year on it. Arctic Silver MX is apparently kinda meh. So I put a decently thick X of the Duronaut paste on there and reinstalled the heat sink.

Booted it back up and ran some more tests.. only to find that Unreal games were STILL pushing the CPU to 80c, quickly. Last Caretaker benchmark is 90 secs long, not a lot of time to see a CPU reach 80c. Loading a save and running around for a bit and it's getting to 86, 87c. The hell. And I've got the graphics set up to push the GPU (9070XT) at 99% ffs. (It's temping at 54c, btw)

Booted up Cyberpunk 2077 and even set so the CPU has to do "more thinking" and the GPU is only sitting around 60%, the temp would not pass 66c as I ran around the center of Night City. So the paste IS applied well, Unreal Engine just puts that much fucking stress on a CPU.

I"m really not a fan of any kind of water cooling. Currently have a Cooler Master heatsink on it. Thinking I'm gonna order one of Thermalright's Peerless Assassins before too long. Tops pretty much every chart of air cooled heatsinks, and it's 50 bucks. Pretty good deal.

It is time to ask for advice on #Linux distributions that are good for #gaming.

I've got two laptops that I'd like to move from Win11 to Linux, the main goal for me is to get away from Microsoft, but to keep using #Steam. (Maybe even some more games might be running on my laptops then!)

I am by no means a programmer or anything, but I can follow a manual. Also, I get easily frustrated, that's what I have to be honest about.

I think that part of why this generation of Xbox failed is because of confusion about the names of the offerings.
In the Xbox One days, they released a more powerful Xbox One called the "One X". I thought this was going to be the next generation for Xbox... it was not.
Then also, why is the family name for this generation the "Series X/S"? Your new generation of consoles is the "Xbox Series" family?? What even is that?

Being able to build custom desktops using #Docker and use them without any latency is AWESOME! Now i can play games on my #thinkpad, spin up various different desktops for any usecase, or use my #kalilinux desktop from whatever device i want to. I can even play #Cyberpunk on my #AndroidTV. I have no words to describe how much i love this 😁

I have a bee in my bonnet now to play the Fallout series games. I don't have a PC running Windows, apparently the best way to experience these titles. I did find an old Asus laptop however that may be coerced into running at least the first couple of games.
Now starts a jolly journey to install some version of Windows on the laptop (trying XP, downloadable from Internet Archive!). This means burning a bootable USB drive correctly on my Macbook, then install, find the games, install them.
Might be done by the time I need to go back to work in the new year.

I'm still not over the end of PiranhaBytes, I think it was one of the most tragic losses of recent video game business craziness over the last few years. A studio who refused to accept that "better graphics" was an acceptable compromise to actual gaming and went their own way and made three memorable gaming franchises that, even with their issues, interest me more than anything a AAA studio has ever put out.

I got gifted the Tomb Raider 1,2,3 collection on GoG, and on a whim I decided I’d install and have a look at how it’s aged. Rather than shelving it for the archive.

I’m astounded at how well it’s aged. You can toggle the new and old visuals with the Start button, but the old version still looks pretty good, and has a much more stable geometry than the old integer poly-wobble days.

But more importantly, for a game about technical platforming in tight spaces, the controls and gameplay still work really well. There’s a Tank controls option which is default, but also a ‘modern’ option, which plays as you’d expect in 2025. And I have to say, for the sorts of platforming where it’s largely only about positioning and timing (usually) it plays great.

Even the auto lock-on for combat is tight and responsive, and I never really felt like I was going to be killed by the camera or duff controls. Water traversal is also fine, you just have to think more like you’re piloting a torpedo than a person. They’ve even added invert Y for us neurospicy lot.

Additionally, how good is this level design?! I’d totally forgotten how good it was.

Highscore leaderboards in #games are an interesting exercise in #GameDesign.

There's so many different ways to design and present a leaderboard! And how to design one that fits a specific game and why is a pretty interesting design decision to make.

There's leaderboards that keep record by player name, usually on arcade machines. That's useful for multi-user games; but even after games were mostly played by a single person only, some games kept the 'enter your name' leaderboard design regardless.

Some leaderboards keep track of the top X best scores ever. That makes sense if score numbers tend to be very variable, like speedrunning times or 'point' scores in games where results can vary easily.

Some other games have very little variation in possible score numbers; for instance, a puzzle game that keeps track of the fewest moves you required. Most players will eventually reach a plateau of identical scores clustered around the logical minimum. A 'top 10 scores ever' leaderboard doesn't make sense there: it'd just be populated with identical entries, given enough time.

That's why there's some leaderboards that keep track of how many games you managed to complete per highscore, to then calculate an average across all your games that you can try to push down.

It's really interesting!

I don't do many preorders of anything, but I love the hell out of shooting games of all kinds- sometimes I gotta jump. Dezatopia came out in 2020 and I've had it on both my Switch and Steam wishlists digitally since then, it's supposed to be great. It's actually the very FIRST thing on my Switch wishlist from all those years ago! So when I heard it was coming out physical with Mecharitz, it was a no brainer. Sure, it took a long time to get here (I preordered in July and just got it now in December). But to me, the wait was worth it. In addition to the cartridge with both games and a manual, it came with another separate book, a CD of the soundtrack, and a poster.

So psyched to try both of these.

Good morning everyone 🌞 I'm up later today after a nice long lie. I'm now sitting listening to Classic FM with the parrots and enjoying a delicious first cup of coffee (why is that first one always like ambrosia?)

Ziggy is grumbling away on her perch, quite content. She gave Grant some trouble with her meds mix again this morning so I may have to give up long lies for a while and get up to make sure she takes it. We have been asked by the vet to reduce the dose of the fluid clearing meds a bit for now as some of Ziggy's blood results show higher uric acid which means she was either a bit dehydrated when they took the blood, or there may be an issue with her kidneys as well. But since the meds are what reduce the fluid on her lungs it's a bit of a balancing act. We will have to go back again in the next week or so to have more blood taken 🥴 I have had elevated uric acid results before that haven't shown up on a second attempt, so hoping it's the same.

Grant and I had a good day playing BG3 yesterday and we actually did the Adamantine Forge quite quickly - mainly because Grant actually listened to what I was telling him we should do this time 😊 We entered the Shadow cursed lands and Grognak quickly went off script again, but realised pretty quickly he should listen when told to make sure he was always within a light source 😂

Plans for today are to go out and hunt down some physical gift card vouchers for my grandsons and nieces so I can send them up with my daughter next week, and then I can finally start working on the competition toy 😊

What's odd about the current meta in Battlefield 6 is that people are picking Support, Recon, or Engineer more than Assault. Is it because the latter is currently 'weak' in utility, or is it that the utilities for other roles is overpowered? Usually in other PVP shooters, players tend to pick [DPS] characters more than other roles as well as certain characters who are OP (until they get nerfed).
I find that very ironic.
