Nachdem die Lady @sunshine eine Linux Gaming Distro verpasst bekommen hat, habe ich mich auch ein bisschen umgeschaut.

Gefunden habe ich für mich das #PikaOS. Image basierendes Debian Zocker OS mit richtig schnellen Bootzeiten und vielen Extras. Und ja, da haben auch die Entwickler vom CachyOS und Nobara ihre Finger mit drin. Es sieht mit Artworks nicht nur niedlich aus, sondern macht auch lustige Geräusche beim Einloggen in den Desktop.

Die Performance mit meinen GOG Linux Games ist sehr gut. Keine Lags oder ähnliches. Die Installation der Games habe ich mit Minigalaxy völlig problemlos erledigt. Lutris läuft auch, habe nur die Wine-GE und Proton-GE Performance noch nicht getestet.

Dann bricht Steam ab und meldet "Fehler beim Schreiben auf dem Medium" Bin von Berechtigungen ausgegangen und habe über die Anwendungsbereichtigungen den Mountpoint ergänzt. Zunächst ohne Erfolg. Oha! Warum habe ich das noch nicht früher gemacht? Fedora läuft fantastisch! Ich hatte nicht eine Hürde zu überwinden und bisher laufen alle Spiele einwandfrei. Zudem ist das gesamte System viel entspannter unterwegs. Sogar UT99 läuft mit dem Launcher out of the Box. Auch der erste Multiplayer-Test lief ohne Probleme :). Playing some #Fallout4 on #SteamDeck and have made an observation. The shadows aren't screen space because they persist when an object is well outside your viewport, including characters and other non static objects. Also, the sun in #Fallout 4 moves in discrete steps instead of gradually.

I have figured out what the problem with The Last Caretaker is. It's "Global Illumination". When I set it to Low, my CPU settles down to a still kinda balmy 82C. Bit high imo, but ok. (Yeah I know AMD chips are "designed to run hot" I just don't like seeing 8 on the front of the temp, just a me thing)

However.. the frame rate drops from around 75ish to fucking TWENTY, TWO ZERO. With dips into the TEENS. TF. If I try to FSR it back to playable, the CPU BBQ kicks back in and it's pushing 90C. So I cannot fix it.

Went to the game's Steam Discussion page and searched for "Global Illumination". Heartening to see 5 pages of posts pop up. So it's not just me. Less heartening is the fact there are zero Dev responses.

I really wanna like and recommend this game.. but I just can't when there's an issue like this that isn't even garnering a response. I do like the premise and the mechanics etc. Just wish the Devs would learn how to "optimize" Unreal Engine 5.

Stupid game prob the sole reason my thermal paste got pumped out and dried, forcing me to buy new paste, then a (soon to arrive) new heatsink, even contemplate buying a new CPU, lol. Damn but Unreal 5 sucks.

Following beating Star Wars Dark Forces Remastered, I went back to another Nightdive remaster, Powerslave Exhumed. I guess I hadn't realized how deep I got into it the last time I played as I loaded my save to find I'm on the second to last level with all the transmitter parts for the good ending.

Cyberpunk 2077 is on a really good sale and apparently is popular on Steam Deck. I'd love to buy it.

However, first-person games make me sick, even on Steam Deck.

Is there any reliable way to get a third-person view in Cyberpunk 2077? I know CD Projekt Red made a deliberate choice to not include a third-person mode so I'm not sure how successful mods have been.

I did finally buy Avowed which is another first-person game with the difference being they included a third-person mode and just emphasized it's not the preferred way to play.

As I'm a huge fan of the Japanese practice of doing a shrine visit to mark the New Year, I did something akin to that in person at my nearest shrine equivalent place and then took Naoe to visit a shrine in #ACShadows.

Chirp chirp chirp little chicken – interfacing Ace Combat 7 for some sweet telemetry for my VF-1 inspired home cockpit

So what happens when sheer stubbornness, a glorified button box, Ace Combat and the Unreal Engine Scripting System meet? Pure magic. I got the game to spew out a constant stream of telemetry data and events in search for more immersion in my VF-1 inspired home cockpit. The approach is the very same that I used for X4 Foundations before: Side load lib Luasocket, get a network connection established and start dumping extracted game data to it. This is highly experimental and the result of hacking away for the last ~4 nights. This video demonstrates the results:

To be perfectly clear: I am aware that Ace Combat is not a “flight sim”, not really worth of an API, and I know that DCS or BMS does it better and in greater detail and even with realism. This is not the point. I started working on this just for fun and to satisfy my own curiosity to see *if I can make it*. This may be hard to believe but chipping rocks together until the computer does what I want is “quality time” for me 🤓

You may have noticed that I’m a Macross fan and that my SimPit is heavily inspired by a VF-1 Valkyrie and that I usually use a modded VF-1 plane in AC as well. This is my personal substitute for the lack of any decent Macross / Robotech game since Macross VOXP.

This said I usually fly Space Pew Pew games with this cockpit so everything you see going on is designed for _space_ and not for flight sim. This is also why I sometimes talk about “ships” or “docked”. This is wording found everywhere in my plumbing pipeline for telemetry. All games I play, that can use this, send their data over this. The idea is that I do not have to rewrite half of the connected systems for every game so I transform the data into a unified format before.

Looks like the first game I'm going to finish in 2026 - not that I usually keep track - is going to be Star Wars Dark Forces Remastered. I've never played this deep into the Dark Forces and with just one level left out of 14, I might as well finish it off.

Meine Steuersoftware (ja, es ist eine Mixkiste ;) ) ist mit Bottles anscheinend voll Funktionsfähig und zur Not habe ich einen Fallback. Nur mein VelocityOne Flightstick und mein Tobii Eyetracker machen mir Sorge. Stick wird wohl nich voll unterstützt und bei, Tracker siehts noch bescheidener aus. @sag3s Yeah I have an entry level #synology 2 bay nas that's been tried and true but the issue with any storage solution is backing it up and redundancy so for every 1gb of data you need 3gb of space. that's too expensive and honestly not much I have requires that level of security so I was just running JBOD with a 4TB and 3TB. Now with my second #proxmox node I'm running #OMV and have set that up with mergerfs so it's one virtual disk but this is why i need the 2.5 between the servers as my media server (#jellyfin) is on the other node.

On top of the virtual merger file, I created an iscsi block for the #gaming VM to store games on. It's the best way I could find how to reduce the overhead the cifs brings so i can remote stream the vm (overhead here too) while still having a stable connection. It's still in the trial and error phase.

Lastly - look at me go just found out I can scrap the 500 character limit.

I'm waffling between two video cards right now, the AMD 9070XT and the nVidia 5070ti, about a $200 Canadian ruble difference..

Arc Raiders wasnt nearly as exciting or engaging as i thought it would be, or as fun as my friends find it.

I'm happy for them.

6 hours in I'm already ready to move on to something new or go back to something else i already play.

Aesthetically, the game is a good exploration of what Fallout must feel like for everyone who isn't the MC:

Nervously, quietly digging through file cabinents in abandoned buildings, hoping whatever poor quality gun & gear i have will be enough to ward off anything that finds me or that i encounter.

In reality i suck at playing the game and it's not compelling enough to justify sitting and learning it.

PCGH hat sich mal die aktuelle Performance von Nvidia und AMD Graka unter Linux im Vergleich zu Linux angeschaut.

Die Gesamtchart aus den Benchmarks ist für mich als RTX 5090 User ziemlich eindeutig.
Unter Windows erreicht sie fast 100% Leistung, unter Linux nur noch ca. 75€ Leistung.

Damit werde ich fürs Zocken auch zukünftig fürs Erste auf #Windows11 bleiben.
Fast 25% Leistungsverlust unter Linux ist für mich ein zu hoher Trade Off.
