Question for #Apple home automation users. I want to set up an automation where I get an alert when the temperature on one of my sensors drops below a certain value. There does not seem to be a way to send an alert. I must be missing something because this is pretty basic for home automation. Any ideas? #SmartHome

Muutama viikko sitten asensin Linuxin ja siinä jälkimeiningeissä myös Thunderbirdin.
Oma kokemus Thunderbirdistä ajoittuu yli 10 vuoden taakse, joten client on tuttu ennestään. Gmail-tilit sain heittämällä sisään. iCloud Mail tilin kohdalla tuli seinä vastaan. Jätin asian myöhemmälle selvitettäväksi.
No nyt päätin ottaa härkää sarvista ja selvittää mikä homma. Selvisi ettei Thunderbirdissä voi käyttää AppleID salasanaa. Vaaditaan sovelluskohtainen salasana. Tämä aamu meneekin nyt siinä, sen luomisessa.

2025 und der einzige Weg - ohne irgendeine extra Software - meine knapp 20.000 Fotos vom #iPhone easy auf einer externen Festplatte zu sichern ist der Download über #Apple Privacy?
17 Pro dreht beim Versuch direkt auf einer Festplatte zu sichern komplett durch. Und auf häppchenweise habe ich bei der Menge echt keine Lust.
iCloud lässt auch nur maximal 1.000 Fotos gleichzeitig zu beim sichern.
Der Weg über „digitale Bilder“ auf dem Mac zeigt mir noch nicht mal 3.000 Bilder an.

GlobalTA/UX’ing tonight!
It's been quite a while since I’ve done something silly with an old Mac so I installed A/UX on my IIfx. It's something I've wanted to do for a while (and tried a few times in the past) but never managed to get it to work until now - turns out A/UX is incompatible with the BMOW ROM-inator - after reinstalling my stock IIfx ROM it works like a charm, even supporting my Interware video card and Asante ethernet card.
Software compatibility is a bit spotty when it comes to network apps - iCab and TurboGopher didn't work, but MacLynx and the Wikipedia app do. And of course #GlobalTalk works like a charm!
Also it's crazy that I can telnet into this thing from my daily driver MacBook Pro 🤣

breathing life back into an old macbook pro – omarchy edition
I love giving life to old computers. Over the weekend, I got my son a used M1 Macbook Air and so a 2014 intel based 13″ Macbook Pro that was flashed with Chrome OS Flex became available to tinker. I immediately got started setting up omarchy on it.
Honestly, it’s been a lot of fun setting it up. There are many things I don’t like about DHH. However, we do share some similar sentiments and I guess tastes around how to setup a linux distro.
I’ve been tinkering with linux distros since 2002 when I got my very first computer.
This is _by far_ the best installation experience I’ve ever had. It also strikes a strong balance between pre configuration and setting up and starting you with something useful. The biggest problems with setting up linux distros in a mac before this has been that Mac based firmware was typically not considered kosher as part of the open-source drivers. So you always had to start with some fiddly system, figure out a way to connect to ethernet and then deal with wifi drivers. Those were the worst.
They were fantastic to learn about the linux system and I won’t regret spending hours trying to debug pulse audio and broadcom wifi drivers. However, those are not necessary to take a system from useless to working.
Chrome OS Flex was also a great way to bring this macbook pro back to life as apple EOL’d this a long time ago. However, omarchy seems to have even gotten around some of the weirdness of chrome OS Flex and its high cpu usage when typing too.
Overall, if your goal is to breathe life into some old intel hardware, this is the way to go now.
Highly recommend.

With #macOS 26, #Apple now has full first-party support for #containers that leverages Kata with a very #Docker like CLI available. This is still running a Linux kernel, but hopefully this will evolve into being able to run native macOS containers too.

Certain MacBook{Pro,Air} models (Early
2015-ish) suffer from a firmware bug that
causes OpenBSD to end up very confused
about how to ACPI on boot. This usually
means the ramdisk getting stuck at "sd0"
or thereabouts after the boot prompt. The
system does boot eventually, but it takes
10,000 seconds for the ACPI gremlins to
give up. The slow boot issue can be
avoided by recompiling the OpenBSD kernel
with two lines commented out in acpi.c.
This patched OpenBSD release is compiled
with the affected lines removed. Therefore
this release boots without any issues. No
waiting, no timeouts, only sweet, sweet
Unix for your Apple machine.
