stymied by Apple's after seizing journalist's

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has so far been unable to access data from a reporter's iPhone because it was protected by Apple's Lockdown Mode when agents seized the device from the reporter's home, the US government said in a court filing.

The last year I’ve been making a conscious effort to pivot away from proprietary/american tech, for a mix of reasons. I’m increasingly worried about , data collection, data sovereignity, that kind of things. Not wanting to have more or less my entire life stored on servers inside american privacy and data laws jurisdiction. Wanting to support tech. And, where possible, a preference for open source software. I’ve been quite in the «apple fanboy» category for the last 20+ years, and deeply buried in the whole iCloud ecosystem. Partly because of Apple’s traditional stance on privacy, and the whole «if a service is free, you’re the product» thing. I used to look forward to event keynotes like others do to football matches. The last handful of iterations of , , macs and iPhones has sparked steadily decreasing amounts of enthusiasm from me though. Anyway, the last year has seen me replace most iCloud services with @protonprivacy , my macbook pro with a @tuxedocomputers infinitybook pro running , and my iPhone with a 6 running @murena /e/OS. And a patchwork of other services and apps to replace what I used to have. Here's a summary, and some questions to others. 1/n

(Apple) the company seems to have lost the one thing it held onto so firmly during all of the ups and downs of its history: its ethos of values-driven, liberal creativity and intentional design. Apple’s past periods of turbulence relating to profitability, marketshare, compatibility, and governance seem quaint now; memories of a better time. The Apple of today has become homogenous with its industry, in terms of its cultural failings.

The FBI has been unable to access a Washington Post reporter’s seized iPhone because it was in Lockdown Mode, a sometimes overlooked feature that makes iPhones broadly more secure, according to recently filed court records.

Lockdown Mode is a sometimes overlooked feature of Apple devices that broadly make them harder to hack. A court record indicates the feature might be effective at stopping third parties unlocking someone's device. At least for now.

                            The time is probably right.

Back in 2022, when I was still using iOS, I wasn’t completely happy with the Fediverse apps that were available. I was mostly using Akkoma, and the interface I liked the most was actually its web UI, even on mobile. So I started playing with Xcode and put together the foundations of an app tailored to my needs.

A lot has changed since then and today we have great alternatives like IceCubes, Mona, Ivory, etc. Each one has strengths and weaknesses though, so I picked up my old project again and kept pushing it forward.

So I’m happy to announce that my app will finally see the light: I’ve been using it for the past few days and, in my spare time, I’m fixing bugs and adding missing features. I’m building it around my own needs, so it doesn’t have to “appeal to everyone”. I wouldn’t call it opinionated, but it’s definitely targeted.

The app will have one key trait: support will be a first-class feature, not an incidental one. Many apps, especially on iOS, support snac as a side effect, but the experience is often not optimal. In this case, the choice is deliberate and it strictly follows the Mastodon API support implemented by snac. So snac will work properly (within the limits of the platform, of course).

Among the features already implemented: the app is minimal and lightweight (under 10 MB, including debug code), easy on RAM, and privacy-first (for example it strips EXIF data from media before posting, so the server will never see it). On snac it also cleans up the "Boosted by Aoderelay" messages that appear when using a relay, removes the character limit, and supports posting in Markdown.

I also added support for Apple Intelligence to generate alt text, both for the media I post and for media posted by others that is missing alt text.

Everything is processed locally through Apple APIs and only on supported devices. The results aren't amazing, Apple Intelligence is extremely limited, but in my opinion it's the only privacy-friendly and ethical way to approach it. And of course, you can disable it.

On Mastodon it supports all the main features: lists, quote posts, granular notifications (you can choose what you want for each category), notification grouping, multi-account support, and it works.

It's still missing a few things (block, etc.) and has some bugs, which I’m spotting as I keep using it.
As soon as it's stable enough, I'll invite a few people to test it. I still haven't fully decided how I'll distribute it: an Apple Developer account has a yearly cost, and I hope to reuse it for other projects too. So this app might be paid, with a trial period, but if possible (I still need to check what’s feasible) I'd like it to be free if you connect to one of the BSD Cafe instances, illumos Cafe, or any snac instance, including your own.

I don't know how long it will take before it's ready... but I can already tell you what it will be called.
It already has a name, and it's... MastoBlaster.

This name was chosen for personal reasons, and also because of its similarity to Master Blaster by Stevie Wonder, which even today feels relevant and fitting for the Fediverse.

                            Stay tuned!

Previously, Apple always displayed some basic Mac models with prices on an overview page. Now users have to click through configurations first.

Also, oversaturated MacOS app icons are garishly awful and I don't like faux blurring. Guess it's time to dig into settings.

There is nothing to justify his presence other than sheer clueless stupidity.

Cook is harming Apple’s brand through his association with Trump. Cook’s actions:
                                                                                                                        - Personally gave $1 million to Trump’s inaugural committee

Cook’s actions will not benefit Apple. Association with Trump always leads to negative outcomes and will only harm Apple’s brand.

There’s no excuse or justification for Cook’s actions. It’s time for Tim Cook to go.

Cook, who is gay, is among many tech leaders who have cozied up to Donald Trump and his family. Other tech CEOs who were at the screening included Andy Jassy of Amazon, Eric Yuan of Zoom, and Lisa Su of AMD, Yahoo! News reports. They were among about 70 guests at the East Room screening. The film is from Amazon Studios.

The 37-year-old nurse was observing and protesting operations by Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and video shows him trying to help a woman who was being pepper-sprayed before agents wrestled him to the ground and shot him multiple times. The Trump administration has tried to paint this as a case of self-defense by federal agents, as it did with the killing of Renee Nicole Good, but in both cases, video shows otherwise.

Hope they like the movie.”

Melania represents a comeback for Ratner, who lived at the Trumps’ Mar-a-Lago mansion during filming, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Apple CEO Cook sent out an internal statement to employees, first obtained by Bloomberg, after receiving intense scrutiny for attending Saturday’s private screening of Melania, a documentary about First Lady Melania Trump, at the White House.

The event came just hours after Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old VA nurse, was fatally shot by Department of Homeland Security agents while observing operations in Minneapolis. Video shows Pretti attempted to help a woman who was being pepper-sprayed before officers wrestled him to the ground and took his legal firearm. While Pretti was restrained on the ground and unarmed, an unidentified weapon held by one of the agents discharged, and two unidentified agents responded by shooting Pretti at least 10 times.

"This is a time for deescalation," Cook wrote. "I believe America is strongest when we live up to our highest ideals, when we treat everyone with dignity and respect no matter who they are or where they're from, and when we embrace our shared humanity. This is something Apple has always advocated for."

"I had a good conversation with the president this week where I shared my views, and I appreciate his openness to engaging on issues that matter to us all," Cook continued. "I know this is very emotional and challenging for so many. I am proud of how deeply our teams care about the world beyond our walls. That empathy is one of Apple's greatest strengths and it is something I believe we all cherish."

Meanwhile, Altman told OpenAI employees in a memo obtained by The New York Times that while "what’s happening with [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] is going too far," he and the company are "not going to make a lot of performative statements now about safety or politics or anything else."

"I love the US and its values of democracy and freedom and will be supportive of the country however I can; OpenAI will too," Altman wrote. "But part of loving the country is the American duty to push back against overreach. What’s happening with ICE is going too far. There is a big difference between deporting violent criminals and what’s happening now, and we need to get the distinction right."

"President Trump is a very strong leader, and I hope he will rise to this moment and unite the country, he added. "I am encouraged by the last few hours of response and hope to see trust rebuilt with transparent investigations."

Even if it ends up being a quality suite, DO NOT USE IT. It's a trap! There are free apps that do the exact same thing as these creative suites. They only exist to get you comfortable enough in them that you feel an intense sense of sunk cost in your familiarity so you can never stop paying for the service.

It's still 100% more than you should ever have to spend on software. Especially when I know for a fact that it WILL enshittify.
