In una dichiarazione a The Verge, Kristy Schmidt, senior communications manager della divisione Devices & Services di Amazon, ha detto: "L'industria dell'elettronica di consumo sta affrontando un significativo aumento dei costi dei componenti per memorie e storage. Dopo aver assorbito questi aumenti finché possibile, di recente abbiamo adeguato i prezzi su tutte le nostre linee di prodotto. Tra i prodotti hardware Amazon apparentemente non interessati dagli aumenti figurano la linea di telecamere e videocitofoni Ring e l'Echo Studio, lo smart speaker di fascia alta da 219,99 dollari.
Non solo Amazon: la crisi delle memorie colpisce tutto il settore
Il caso Amazon si inserisce in una crisi più ampia dei componenti per memorie e storage, aggravata dalla domanda dei data center per l'intelligenza artificiale. The cheapest products in Amazon’s catalog are being hit hardest: the Echo Dot has risen from $49.99 to $79.99. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max is up over 40 percent, at $84.99, while the basic Kindle now costs $149.99, almost 37 percent more.

Amazon’s Statement
In a statement to The Verge, Kristy Schmidt, senior communications manager for Amazon’s Devices & Services division, said: “The consumer electronics industry is facing significant increases in component costs for memory and storage. After absorbing these increases for as long as possible, we recently adjusted prices across all our product lines. Our approach has always been to offer great products at accessible prices, and that commitment hasn't changed.”

Other Products Affected and Those Not Touched by the Hikes
The Echo Dot Max, Amazon’s flagship smart speaker launched last year, now costs $119.99, up from $99.99. Apple increased the price of its HomePod Mini this summer, bringing it from $99.99 to $129, also due to rising costs. The Google Home Speaker remains at $99.99 for now.

Among Amazon’s hardware products apparently unaffected by the increases are the Ring line of cameras and video doorbells, and the Echo Studio, the high-end smart speaker priced at $219.99.

Not Just Amazon: The Memory Crisis Affects the Entire Sector
Amazon's situation fits into a broader crisis of memory and storage components, exacerbated by demand from data centers for artificial intelligence. Apple has also had to raise prices on iPads, MacBooks, HomePods, and Apple TVs, after then-CEO Tim Cook told the Wall Street Journal that increases were now “inevitable,” calling the memory crisis “a millennial flood” and stating he had never seen such rapid and substantial price increases in components during his more than 40 years of career.

After a private placement in June, the company could publish its listing prospectus, and therefore make its accounts known for the first time, “in the coming weeks,” according to the New York Times, ahead of an expected stock market listing this autumn.

Challenge to OpenAI
Anthropic would thus surpass OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, which had presented its own private placement a week later, but which now aims for a listing in 2027.

Skype is still sitting on my phone. It stopped working when Microsoft shut it down last May (2025 btw), and I am still not deleting it.

ICQ did not survive the last phone. Moving to a new iPhone pulls everything back down from the App Store, and ICQ has not been in the store since 2024, so it just quietly never came back. No warning and nothing to confirm. On the old phone it was there, on the new one it was gone.

So a dead app lives exactly as long as the phone it sits on.

Since getting away from Apple on mobile will take a while, I guess I’ll keep complaining how visuals are prioritised over functionality. So many apps have tiny touch points or partially hidden functionality (Apple being the worst offender) - and the Dynamic Island made it worse by having a smaller area to tap to scroll to the top of the screen. 8 out of 10 times when I tap the Dynamic Island and switch apps to an audio app, what I really wanted to do was scroll to the top of the app I was in. Oh, and whenever I have played a podcast and want to resume it in #PocketCasts after a little while, some other app starts playing instead.
