The amount of bugs in #Apple’s #Tahoe OS are now well-known, but I find their abundance shocking and disheartening.
The design of their processes for the user have also become cluttered, by adding unnecessary extra steps. To wit: when I click “edit” on a phone contact, I now get a little pop-up that says “edit this contact“ and I have to press that in order to actually make the edit. Why are there two steps to pressing edit? No other options are offered in the second step, so what’s the point?

Ich wurde vor kurzem gefragt, ob ich die Bibliothek eines nicht mehr ganz neuen #iPods auf meinen #Homeserver übertragen kann.
Prinzipiell mach ich das ja gerne, nur habe ich in Erinnerung, dass ipods Dateien benamst nach einem eigenen System.
Gibt es da ein Skript, das mir die Dateien so tagged, dass ich sie wieder sinnvoll strukturieren kann?
Würde mich freuen, wenn es da was gibt, das is bislang nicht finden konnte...

So I am in a jam with forced upgrades for my #music #studio. Painful, really. My main workhorse is a #Yamaha #Montage 8. Since the release of the new Montage M, Yamaha has dropped support entirely for the first gen model. Its audio interface driver only supports up to #MacOS 14, but still works under 15.0. I receive daily warning messages that further OS updates will break it. Yamaha has stopped development on the driver.
To complicate things, I have an Intel #MacPro for which #Apple will be dropping support in the near future. It was and is only a matter of time. Due to the driver support issue I am forced to keep my Mac at OS 15.0.1. But wait, there's more...
If I upgrade my OS, then I risk breaking the driver and thus lose the capability of #audio and #MIDI over #USB. I use both the analog outputs and the USB, including feeding DAW tracks back into the #synthesizer for additional real time processing. My entire workflow, which I have developed since investing in the MacPro, *will* break and projects which I have started will not be completed. Period.
if that isn't painful enough, the New Yamaha Montage M8X is $5,000. While this is an amazing machine and does include a wealth of new features I'd immediately use (including a faster and more robust #machinelearning engine), these costs of both a new #workstation and new #computer are staggeringly high.
If Yamaha hadn't dropped support for its driver, I'd be fine continuing to use a last generation instrument.
And no, switch to a different workstation, ie #Roland or #Korg is simply not an option.

One of my local volunteer projects is the library's website which I'm updating this morning as Cosmo waits for second breakfast.
Happily using #FreeSoftware: ghostwriter for markdown conversion to html. Then I'll use Kate to edit a couple html files then upload with Filezilla. #GNU #Linux @linuxmint and the Cinnamon DE. All running on a 2018 #Thinkpad bought for $250 on Ebay.
No need for new/expensive hardware from #apple.

I feel a little stupid for cheering on Google when they shamed iOS for not having RCS support. While I think Apple's main impetus for not initially supporting RCS was due to their desire for kids to be bullied for having green bubbles, phones using RCS gives Google a de facto messaging monopoly in the US and I'm questioning if Apple really should have adopted it. 
Most carriers use Google's Jibe services for RCS messaging instead of building out their own infrastructure, and Google doesn't provide any third-party API access to RCS on Android.
I mean, it feels obvious in retrospect, but Google really was just pushing RCS to create a messaging monopoly after Hangouts and Allo utterly failed. By all accounts, RCS is shaping up to be another version of WhatsApp, just with Google in the driver's seat instead of Facebook, and what's worse is that it's baked into your phone instead of being something you have to download.

I would comment that whomever curated that well-intentioned list, doesn't seem to place much "#UX value" on choosing apps *which work across all devices and commonly-used OS'*. Several choices are limited to a few OS', and iOS/iPadOS often gets left out.
Just saying: here in #Canada, where I live, a huge number of family and friends around me use #iOS/#iPadOS as their primary devices. Even though I don't praise or endorse those platforms, none the less I have to think about the support for those OS' before I might make any recommendation/suggestion that they'll take seriously.

Text Shot: In 2024, Apple signed a deal with Taboola to serve ads in its app, notably Apple News. John Gruber, writing in Daring Fireball said at the time:
If you told me that the ads in Apple News have been sold by Taboola for the last few years, I’d have said, “Oh, that makes sense.” Because the ads in Apple News — at least the ones I see1 — already look like chumbox Taboola ads. Even worse, they’re incredibly repetitious.
I use Apple News to keep up on topics that I don’t find in sources I pay for (The Guardian and The New York Times). But there’s no way I’m going to pay the exorbitant price Apple wants for Apple News+ – £13 – because, while you get more publications, you still get ads.
And those ads have gotten worse recently. Many if not most of them look like and probably are scams. Here are a few examples from Apple News today.

The design geniuses at #Apple have made an impressive Apple TV remote. It is small and thin enough to be stored in between couch cushions. Its solid black color keeps it from being a distracting presence, especially in the semi-darkness of a room where TV is being watched. And its symmetrical design cleverly conceals the proper orientation for holding it, adding spontaneity to the otherwise mundane operation of pausing or playing TV content.

Just took my iPhone 13 to the Apple Store to fix its charging port. Thankfully they could fix it up on the spot, but I asked how much it’d cost to replace the port: €400 was the answer.
Holy shirtballs, Batman! Apparently the entire back of the phone is one piece, including the camera and charging port. That is absolutely horrid repairability!
I knew Apple phones were bad for repairability, but that’s unacceptable.

@shantara Nope, your analysis is correct: If your device is supported by iOS 26, you no longer get updates for iOS 18.
To make things worse, one of the updates withhold updates certificates for Messages.
Unless Apple comes to mind, you probably will loose Messages in January 2027 if you refuse to update to iOS 26.

Just requested to get a refund from #Apple for my purchase of #MindShot, developed by #MentalVisionGames. I submitted a review to the app's developer, and their response was, in a word, laughable. Said response is below:
I admit there were a few issues we didn’t catch before submitting to iOS for launch. But, Aren’t you being a bit harsh? Remember how CMR, Blind Legend, and Papa Sangre debuts on this platform? Clunky, slow, and had audio issues. After 20 to 50 serious gamers, emailed their lists of constructive criticisms to the dev teams, what happened? Massive improvements turned junk into epic foundations to build from. What app debuts and never has to update to raise the quality? This 1.O version, just debut on 1/21/26. I never put the words, perfect or flawless in the app description. It will improve but, probably not because of your feedback and anger. Thanks for your concerns. Telling others not to play a game because its too hard for you, doesn’t look attractive to big mainstream studios when gamers lash out on 1 of their own. I believe the term they use for us, niche market. Congrats on the 1. Review spot to match your 1 *. I will let the other accessible action game developers who launch perfect apps on iOS, you said hello! Oh wait… I am the only one left now! True story: my iPad (latest ver 26) - which regularly astounds me as to its ineptitude - would only save 2 of the 4 Superb #Owls recently posted this weekend on #Mastodon. It refused silently, to save the latter two in **exactly the same way** as the first two. I tried twice to save them. It gave no error message, but the owls weren't saved! So I shared the owls directly from #IceCubes into #Deltachat. Yes, that was allowed. So then all 4 could be shared onwards to a friend in #Signal.
No, my #iPad's disk is far from full, as I save very little into the walled garden. It's crazy, I tell you.
Note: I exfil everything - in bulk - periodically into #Copyparty, BTW.
The first two owls are OK on the iPad, but not the second two!

The time is probably right.
Back in 2022, when I was still using iOS, I wasn’t completely happy with the Fediverse apps that were available. I was mostly using Akkoma, and the interface I liked the most was actually its web UI, even on mobile. So I started playing with Xcode and put together the foundations of an app tailored to my needs.
A lot has changed since then and today we have great alternatives like IceCubes, Mona, Ivory, etc. Each one has strengths and weaknesses though, so I picked up my old project again and kept pushing it forward.
So I’m happy to announce that my app will finally see the light: I’ve been using it for the past few days and, in my spare time, I’m fixing bugs and adding missing features. I’m building it around my own needs, so it doesn’t have to “appeal to everyone”. I wouldn’t call it opinionated, but it’s definitely targeted.
The app will have one key trait: #snac2 support will be a first-class feature, not an incidental one. Many apps, especially on iOS, support snac as a side effect, but the experience is often not optimal. In this case, the choice is deliberate and it strictly follows the Mastodon API support implemented by snac. So snac will work properly (within the limits of the platform, of course).
Among the features already implemented: the app is minimal and lightweight (under 10 MB, including debug code), easy on RAM, and privacy-first (for example it strips EXIF data from media before posting, so the server will never see it). On snac it also cleans up the "Boosted by Aoderelay" messages that appear when using a relay, removes the character limit, and supports posting in Markdown.
I also added support for Apple Intelligence to generate alt text, both for the media I post and for media posted by others that is missing alt text.
Everything is processed locally through Apple APIs and only on supported devices. The results aren't amazing, Apple Intelligence is extremely limited, but in my opinion it's the only privacy-friendly and ethical way to approach it. And of course, you can disable it.
On Mastodon it supports all the main features: lists, quote posts, granular notifications (you can choose what you want for each category), notification grouping, multi-account support, and it works.
It's still missing a few things (block, etc.) and has some bugs, which I’m spotting as I keep using it.
As soon as it's stable enough, I'll invite a few people to test it. I still haven't fully decided how I'll distribute it: an Apple Developer account has a yearly cost, and I hope to reuse it for other projects too. So this app might be paid, with a trial period, but if possible (I still need to check what’s feasible) I'd like it to be free if you connect to one of the BSD Cafe instances, illumos Cafe, or any snac instance, including your own.
I don't know how long it will take before it's ready... but I can already tell you what it will be called.
It already has a name, and it's... MastoBlaster.
This name was chosen for personal reasons, and also because of its similarity to Master Blaster by Stevie Wonder, which even today feels relevant and fitting for the Fediverse.
