Why after avoiding Apple for decades, I'm buying the new Apple Neo

I have been almost entirely in the ecosystem since the dawn of Google, and in fact bought my first Android phone the first day the first Android phone (the venerable G1 with the slide-out keyboard, which I still have and still boots, though with an open source OS version) became available. All my smartphones since then have been Android -- I don't expect that to change.

Other than the single purchase of a tiny iPod Nano long ago, I have avoided hardware due (among other things) to its typically outrageous pricing and lack of competition in the hardware manufacturing space.

In fact, I made an anti-Apple decision long, long ago, when I chose to work with the 8080/Z80 CPU microcomputers rather than the 68000 series CPUs that Apple chose for its early Macintosh and Lisa lines.

Of course my main work over the decades has been with UNIX/Linux, my servers are and have always run these, and my primary desktops are Linux as well. There are also a number of Chromebooks, Android tablets, Android/Google based TV devices, and some Windows systems for compatibility with needed Windows apps. There more stuff of course but you get the idea.

Along the way I've frequently been asked about issues related specifically to Apple iOS and MACs, and I have simply replied that I don't have expertise with those.

So I've long been aware of this gap, but couldn't justify the expense of any Apple hardware simply for the purpose of filling that gap.

Two events have changed this a bit. First it's clear that both Google and Apple have been moving with notable speed ever farther into the Dark Side, with their billionaire CEOs embracing fascist Trump and seemingly everything evil that he represents.

This creates an interesting dynamic, if one feels that purely open source systems cannot completely fulfill one's required hardware and software needs. In essence, the question becomes is it better to deal mainly with a single Evil Big Tech firm, or split your needs in some respects across two of them (or three, if we include Windows requirements and Microsoft).

For now I view the "split" as the most practical choice -- for me, anyway -- and the new Apple (whose macOS runs a largely usable UNIX under the hood) represents what seems to be the most cost effective current path to this (it does appear to be a disruptive design in terms of capabilities and pricing, that may give Google's Chromebooks a run for their money, especially in the educational space).

Anyway, just thought I'd mention all this -- more than you wanted to know, of course.

                            Best,

                            L

The MacBook Neo has me thinking about trying a Mac for portable use again. We've got a MacBook Pro here that died in the middle of Covid. It stopped booting, black screen. I'm wondering if it's worth hauling into an Apple store (an 80 mile trip for me) to see if it can be revived. Or is it too old to be worth it, or is it even supported. Probably a 2017 model. Thoughts Mac folk?

We had an incident this morning with my grandmother, and I've had to send out some e-mails. And the Apple Intelligence stuff, summarizes the contents of the e-mail really briefly in the message view. Very nice feature, and I just now noticed it does that because it's very, very not in your face. None of the AI stuff in is really front and center, and what is there actually does useful things.

I’m technically-minded enough to enjoy digging into the engineering of MacBooks and iPhones—even things I don’t use, like cars or weapons. But ultimately, tools are means to an end—inspiration, possibility, vision, renewal. Apple is the one tech company that actually cares about this—maybe 5%, maybe 1%, certainly far behind profits, marketing, design, logistics. But they do care about it, and that matters.

But behind the garden of potential, abysses of risk open up that companies still don’t know how to manage. We discussed this with Emanuele Caronia, CEO of Exelab, a technology consulting firm.

I generally keep it off except for those times when I absolutely need it on my mobile device. Today, I thought I could find it quicker by searching for it. If I go to the settings app and I explicitly look for JavaScript, no results show up at all. I think if you’re a developer of any operating system, and you have a search function, I think that should be able to find advance options as well as surface level options.

At 8 GB with MacOS, you are constantly, and I mean, constantly swapping. It' just not enough. It's enough for Linux (although it lately has become bloated too; Fedora/Ubuntu need 4 GB for an equivalent experience), but MacOS needs a lot of tightening to get such a product out of the door and call it a day with so little RAM.

RAM, RAM, RAM. Only thing that matters on a computer.

It allows carriers to isolate and prioritize certain traffic, from apps, to specific endpoints, special hardware, etc.

On iPhone devices, Apple calls this feature "Enhance 5G for Apps", which sounds like a good thing. Verizon states that 5G networks lend themselves especially well to this technology.

I keep torn between iOS and Android and wanted to know if you use any kind of smartwatch? And if so, which one? That's the only thing holding me back from getting an Android phone. There's simply nothing as user-friendly as the Apple Watch.

This week, Apple released security updates for iOS and iPadOS versions 15 and 16. The updates address a few old vulnerabilities leveraged by the Coruna exploit kit, which made headlines last week.

Meanwhile, Apple is knowingly leaving hundreds of security flaws unpatched—including ones exploited in other real-world attacks from various threat actors.*

Why does Apple only patch a handful of vulnerabilities that get news coverage, while ignoring others that are equally dangerous and just as likely to impact users? Does Apple care more about optics than protecting its customers? 🤔

In the bottom half, a face resembling Mr. Incredible is half hidden in shadow as he evidently has come to a horrible realization about the number of vulnerabilities that remain unpatched, including three that Apple has said were exploited in the wild since the release of iOS 26, and more than 170 others are listed and overflowing onto his face. Note: Even more vulnerabilities than those listed are likely to affect iOS 15 and 16. The list in this meme only includes vulnerabilities Apple has patched in iOS 26.x. While the RAM package appears to be on the smaller side, that didn't affect the feel and responsiveness of the system. PC manufacturers and Microsoft are cooked, there is no way I could recommend a #Wintel PC to anyone with the Neo being available.
