Interesting macOS security finding: trusted apps can be silently replaced
Security researchers at Mysk discovered a macOS behavior that allows an attacker who already has code execution as the current user to silently replace the main executable of certain installed applications.
The concerning part? The modified app can still launch normally and appear to be the legitimate application.
The issue affects applications downloaded from the web, including examples such as Signal, Brave, Cursor, Slack, VS Code, Xcode, and others, after they’ve been launched at least once.
Even more interesting, the malicious replacement can trigger legitimate macOS permission prompts displaying the trusted application’s name and icon. A user could therefore be tricked into granting access to sensitive resources such as Keychain data or protected files.
Apple reviewed the report and determined that it does not require a security fix, noting that the attack doesn’t bypass Gatekeeper or TCC and requires prior code execution.
Still, I think this raises an important security-design question:
Should macOS revalidate an application’s code signature whenever its bundle changes, and should permission prompts identify the actual developer/code-signing identity requesting access?
It’s a great example of how security isn’t always about bypassing a protection. Sometimes it’s about exploiting the trust users place in a legitimate application.
