Tra il 13 e il 14 agosto Apple ha inviato a una parte dei suoi utenti una notifica piuttosto insolita: il loro iPhone potrebbe essere stato preso di mira da uno spyware. Gli avvisi hanno raggiunto persone in 110 Paesi e, tra i destinatari, non ci sarebbero soltanto giornalisti, attivisti o figure pubbliche. Il messaggio mostrato da Apple non lascia molto spazio alle interpretazioni: “Apple ha rilevato un attacco spyware mirato al tuo iPhone. Puoi intraprendere alcune azioni ora per proteggere i tuoi dati e il tuo dispositivo”.
Non è la prima volta che Apple invia comunicazioni di questo tipo. L’azienda ha iniziato a notificare gli utenti potenzialmente coinvolti in attacchi spyware mirati nel 2021 e, da allora, ha continuato a farlo in diverse occasioni. Secondo quanto riportato dal Corriere della Sera, quello di cui si parla in questo caso è il cosiddetto spyware mercenario, cioè un software di sorveglianza sviluppato e venduto da società private. Sono strumenti molto più avanzati rispetto ai malware comuni e vengono utilizzati per attacchi mirati, con l’obiettivo di ottenere informazioni da uno specifico dispositivo.
Uno dei nomi più conosciuti in questo settore è Pegasus, lo spyware sviluppato da NSO Group e già finito al centro di numerose inchieste internazionali. Non ci sono però conferme che sia stato utilizzato anche in questa campagna. Alcune segnalazioni online parlano di strumenti che potrebbero essere simili, ma al momento non è possibile stabilire con certezza quale spyware ci sia dietro gli attacchi.

Between August 13th and 14th, Apple sent a rather unusual notification to a portion of its users: their iPhone might have been targeted by spyware. The alerts reached people in 110 countries, and among the recipients there would not only be journalists, activists, or public figures. The message shown by Apple leaves little room for interpretation: “Apple has detected a spyware attack targeting your iPhone. You can take some actions now to protect your data and device.”

It’s not the first time that Apple has sent communications of this type. The company began notifying users potentially involved in spyware attacks targeted in 2021, and since then it has continued to do so on several occasions. According to Corriere della Sera, what is being discussed in this case is the so-called “mercenary” spyware, i.e., surveillance software developed and sold by private companies. These are much more advanced tools than common malware and are used for targeted attacks, with the goal of obtaining information from a specific device.

One of the best-known names in this sector is Pegasus, the spyware developed by NSO Group and already at the center of numerous international investigations. However, there are no confirmations that it was used in this campaign either. Some online reports speak of tools that could be similar, but at present it is not possible to definitively establish which spyware is behind the attacks.

Today, I did a factory reset on my old 2019 era Intel #MacBookPro 16-in.
