Push Notifications and MastoBlaster

MastoBlaster, like other Fediverse apps, uses a design that maximizes user privacy.

When you log in to your instance, the app and the server exchange the necessary cryptographic keys. The app also communicates to the instance the address of the relay, which is the server responsible for forwarding notifications to Apple.

When a new notification is generated:

1. Your instance encrypts the notification.
2. It sends the encrypted payload to the relay.
3. The relay forwards it to Apple using its own authentication key.
4. Apple delivers it to your device.

The content of the notification is encrypted by your Fediverse server and can only be decrypted by your device.

The relay, which in the case of MastoBlaster is dedicated and hosted on a FreeBSD server, receives only encrypted data. It cannot read the content, does not know which account the notification belongs to, and does not store any information about the notification itself.

Apple knows which relay sent the notification and which device it must be delivered to, but it cannot access the content.

In short, only your instance and your device can read the notification.

Mein #diday Projekt am Wochenende:

Raus aus #Apple #Notes (auch wenn es schön, praktisch und solide ist) zu #obsidian

Dort kann ich nun besser mit Dateien arbeiten und diese in Notizen einbinden. Das ging in Notes nie richtig - auch nicht mit iWork Dateien.
Und Obsidian formatiert die Dateien deutlich sauberer als Notes, wenn man mit vielen Überschriften arbeitet.

Also: Umstellung war/ist viel Arbeit - aber es scheint zu werden.

It may not be vintage but my 2011 Mac Mini is operational. As a music server it is great with iTunes and my old iPods.

This morning I installed the Powerfox browser along with Firefox ESR and both work excellent. Even plays YouTube videos. Installed uBlock Origin, Proton Pass and some other privacy extensions in ESR. Unfortunately Powerfox is limited with add-ons, but it's quick on this old Mac with 8GB running 10.13.6 High Sierra.

It feels like I'm back in 2011 listening to music browsing the web and converting FLAC files to ALAC with XLD for iTunes.

Seit dem letzten, großen Update, wo sie die Tastatur tauschten, habe ich Probleme beim Schreiben.
Und natürlich kann man bei Apple, anders als bei #Android, keine andere Tastatur installieren.
Wozu auch? Ist ja von Apple. Also ist es ja perfekt wie es ist. Die leben immer noch die Late Hochnäsigkeit von Steve Jobs weiter. Aber seine Kombination aus Perfektion und Kreativität haben sie nicht. Deswegen werden die Produkte immer schlechter.
Wahrscheinlich wird mein nächstes Tablett kein Apple Produkt werden. Mit meinem kleinen Tablett bin ich ja schon auf Android umgestiegen.

This app (Macky) showed up on Hacker News as a supposedly easy way to connect from your iPhone to your Mac command line without something as old-fashioned (or secure) like SSH. It uses WebRTC instead for ... reasons.

Immediate first question: why should I trust this closed source app from an unknown source with remote access to my Mac?

I had a play with it using mitmproxy and one thing is for sure, it doesn't implement certificate pinning. It happily connected to my self-signed certificate. When you set a master password for access to your Mac it's sent to their server (a Cloudflare Worker) as plaintext (albeit over TLS) rather than using it as input to a key derivation function. That makes me think it's probably stored server-side with little to no security. All in all, there ain't a bargepole long enough for me to touch this with.

I tried #Apple’s USB-C earbuds with my #Samsung phone and discovered they simply don’t support call handling on some #Android devices.

There’s no option to take calls through the earbuds at all.

With USB-C, cross-platform compatibility should be standard by now.

I’m aware of the #LibrePods project on #GitHub, but it currently requires root access on Android and doesn’t mention support for wired EarPods or addressing this issue, so it isn’t a practical solution at the moment.

That said, for anyone using Apple’s #AirPods, #LibrePods is still worth exploring if you’re interested in unlocking additional functionality that’s effectively hidden by design.
