This Apple vs EU conflict is really interesting because I see both sides of the debate. On the one hand, Apple doesn't want to commit to 18+ months of engineering work to put in an AI-agnostic platform for users to select different AI platforms inside of iOS and MacOS if the EU isn't willing to say at the beginning that it will or won't meet the requirements of the DMA. I definitely feel that 100%, one of the MOST frustrating things with GDPR and the DMA is that you don't know if a solution will actually be compliant. You have to adopt the solution and basically wait for someone to say "no that's not going to work". It feels frankly like a waste of time.

On the other hand, it is clear that the underlying point of the DMA is extremely valid. American tech companies are monopolies that use their existing dominance to further extend their business into subsectors and choke out competition. Google couldn't put more Gemini AI buttons into Chrome and Android if it tried and from the last Google I/O made it clear that they don't care at all about bypassing protections on Android apps to allow AI to interact with those apps on the users behalf.

I was surprised to see the level of anger Apple leadership directed at the EU, given that the EU is not the only market that they cannot launch the new Siri in. They also cannot launch it in China, but they're clearly afraid of criticizing China so the fury is directed at the EU instead. Clearly this is intended to rile up the Apple users in the EU to action.

However as a pretty passionate Apple user I'm not clear why I would do that. Even if the LLM features are "great", why wouldn't I just want more RAM and processing power that I get to use? I'm not clear what about this situation would spur me to action? The ability to make a shortcut by telling iOS what I want the shortcut to do? The primary selling point of the new Siri seems to be searching through iMessage and Notes and Apple Mail. I don't use Notes or Apple Mail and I delete all of iMessage after 30 days which I don't think is that unusual.
