The brilliance of Apple's industry-leading software developers can be seen in the fact that when I used the “Remove Duplicates” function to clean up my contacts, it didn't simply make a random selection of valid, non-duplicated contacts to delete. Instead, it homed in with unerring precision on some of the most essential.

Viimeiset tunnit menossa Steve Jobs -kirjasta Storytelissä.
Oli se kyllä hämmentävä miekkonen, kerta kaikkiaan.
Kirja on kyllä kirjoitettu tosi hyvin! Mielenkiinto pysyy yllä läpi teoksen ja kieltämättä ihan silleen seitinohuesti nousee mieleen, että pitäiskö noihin Applen tuotteisiin kuitenkin vähän perehtyä ja antaa mahdollisuus. Tähän asti olen karttanut kuin ruttoa.
Mut ensin kirja loppuun 😂
Somehow or other the Bluetooth on my 11th gen #iPad is really inefficient for power consumption. Playing music over #Bluetooth runs down the battery fast. Much faster than an #Android phone streaming the same exact music to the same bluetooth speaker. The iPad's battery percent ticks down like 2 or 3 times as fast as keeping Bluetooth off. #Apple
MacBook Pro M5: Apple makes battery replacement easier
Previously, the entire top case had to be replaced when giving a MacBook Pro a new battery. Apple is changing that – for one model.

Apparently, #macOS ships an ancient version of #gperf (3.0.3) from 2007! Of course, you can use something like #Homebrew or #MacPorts to install a newer version, but of course Apple LOVES to ship ancient developer tools! /s
(I get it's probably a GPL v3 issue, but I'm afraid I do not care because I'm very confident and certain you can still find a way to ship these developer tools without violating the GPL v3. At least, if you're that big a company you can. Do better, #Apple)!

So I fully expected to put my G915 TKL back on the desk almost immediately, but I've actually been using the #Apple Extended Keyboard II unironically for a couple of days now. Keyboards have barely changed in decades - certainly not enough to make older ones *obsolete*, this one's merely *incompatible* without the right adapter - and unless I was working, or programming, and needed my keyboard to be as finely tuned an instrument as Mitutoyo calipers, it's a completely adequate input device.

Apple’s terrible UI design is not the fault of just one fall guy
There's been endless talk online about just how bad Apple's graphical user interface design has become over the years, culminating in the introduction of Liquid Glass across all of the company's operating systems this year. Despite all the gnawing of teeth and scathing think pieces before the final rollout, i

For more than a decade, dozens of journalists and human rights activists have been
🆘 targeted and hacked by governments all over the world.
Cops and spies in Ethiopia, Greece, Hungary, India, Mexico, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates, among others, have used sophisticated #spyware to compromise the phones of these victims, who at times have also faced real-world #violence being intimidated, harassed, and in extreme cases, even #murdered.
In the last few years, in the fight to protect these higher-risk communities,
⭐️a team of a dozen digital security experts,
mostly based in Costa Rica, Manila, and Tunisia, among other places,
have played a key role.
They work for the New York-headquartered nonprofit
"Access Now", specifically its "Digital Security Helpline".
Their mission is to be the team of people who journalists, human rights defenders, and dissidents can go to if they suspect they’ve been hacked,
such as with mercenary spyware made by companies like NSO Group, Intellexa, or Paragon.
“The idea is to provide this 24/7 service to civil society and journalists so they can reach out whenever they have… a cybersecurity incident,”
#Hassen #Selmi, who leads the incident response team at the Helpline, told TechCrunch.
According to #Bill #Marczak, a senior researcher at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab who has been investigating spyware for almost 15 years,
Access Now’s Helpline is a
“frontline resource”
for journalists and others who may have been targeted or hacked with spyware.
The helpline has become a critical funnel for victims.
So much so that when Apple sends its users a so-called
“threat notification” alerting them that they have been targeted with mercenary spyware,
the tech giant has long directed victims to Access Now’s investigators.
In speaking with TechCrunch, Selmi described a scenario where someone gets one of these threat notifications, and where Access Now can help victims.
“Having someone who could explain it to them, tell them what they should do, what they should not do, what this means…
This is a big relief for them,”
said Selmi.
According to several digital rights experts who have investigated spyware cases and previously spoke with TechCrunch,
#Apple is generally taking the right approach, even if the optics look like a trillion-dollar tech giant offloading its responsibility to a small team of nonprofit workers.
Being mentioned by Apple in the notifications, said Selmi, was
“one of the biggest milestones” for the helpline.
Selmi and his colleagues now look into about 1,000 cases of suspected government spyware attacks per year.
Around half of those cases turn into actual investigations,
and only around 5% of them,
around 25, result in a confirmed case of spyware infection,
according to Mohammed Al-Maskati, the helpline’s director.
When Selmi started doing this work in 2014, Access Now were only investigating around 20 cases of suspected spyware attacks per month.
At the time, there were three or four people working in each timezone in Costa Rica, Manila, and Tunisia,
locations that allowed them to have someone online throughout the whole day.
The team isn’t that much bigger now, with fewer than 15 people working for the helpline.
The helpline has more people in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and Sub-Saharan region,
given that these are hotspots for spyware cases, according to Selmi.
The increase in cases, Selmi explained, is due to several circumstances.
For one, the helpline is now more well known,
so it attracts more people.
Then, with government spyware going global and becoming more available,
there are potentially more cases of abuse.
Finally, the helpline team has done more outreach to potentially targeted populations,
finding cases of abuse they may not have found otherwise.

While its certainly true that part of why so much of the US mainstream establishment, particularly in the private sector, is willing to collaborate openly with the fascist Trump regime is because they prefer fascism to sharing, it's also true that there are clear material benefits to legitimizing and supporting the Trumpenreich regime. In what reasonable people would describe as "open corruption," Federal Election Commission data shows that the administration has dropped or frozen federal enforcement cases against "at least 17 corporations that donated to the president's inaugural fund."
https://www.commondreams.org/news/trump-corporations-inauguration
'See How This Works?': Trump Drops Cases Against Corporations That Funded His Inauguration
"Public Citizen found that corporations facing federal investigations or enforcement lawsuits donated a combined $50 million to President Donald Trump's inaugural committee. Trump raised a record sum of $239 million for his second inauguration, the new FEC filings show.
"Corporations facing federal lawsuits and investigations aren't giving millions to Trump's inauguration out of the kindness of their hearts," said Public Citizen researcher Rick Claypool. "They are trying to buy good will. And when you're a corporation under investigation or facing prosecution, that means the government dropping enforcement actions against you. In some cases, it may even mean receiving pardons in cases in which guilty pleas have already been entered, or retractions of settlements already entered into."
Bank of America, Capital One, Coinbase, DuPont, and JPMorgan are among the corporations that donated to Trump's inauguration and subsequently had federal enforcement cases dismissed.
Public Citizen noted that Google, which donated $1 million to Trump's inaugural committee, could benefit from the Trump Justice Department's decision during an ongoing antitrust case to scrap part of a "proposed breakup plan requiring Google to sell off AI businesses."
As the article notes, dropped federal enforcement cases against corporations that paid millions to kiss the ring at the Klepto Kaiser's inauguration isn't the only way large corporate actors like Apple, Google, and Coinbase have directly benefited from fascist collaboration. Apple in particular must be delighted with Trump's decision to exempt most of its imports from his absurd tariffs; which seems like a ridiculously good return on its investment of a million dollars for Der Leader's inauguration. Finally, while I personally don't care that much about the regime's decision to monetize the Easter Egg Roll by accepting corporate sponsors, it does speak to the crass levels of greed and corruption the administration and its lawless president are willing to engage in.
On some level I understand that right now it's hard to care that much about bog standard open corruption between the Trump regime and corporate actors happy to normalize and facilitate fascism for five points a share. The Pork Reich is snatching protestors off the street, fighting a war that doesn't exist against a gang that isn't invading us while trafficking migrants to a torture prison in El Salvador, and Elon Musk is firing thousands of federal workers in a scheme to pay for billionaire tax cuts that will absolutely get people killed. There's a lot going on, and "rich capitalists are doing something terrible for their own financial benefit" almost doesn't rate as "news" in an environment like the one we're living in.
The fact is however, it's precisely because of all the other evil fascist shit is going on that private sector collaboration with the Trump regime is such an important story. As I've explained elsewhere: fascism costs American society a horrifying toll both financially and in terms of human suffering, but the installation and operation of a fascist regime can be quite profitable for some. These companies, many of whom also contribute to Republican election funds and political action committees, absolutely know what Trump is and what he means to do because Downmarket Mussolini and his minions say the quiet parts out loud on the regular. They just don't give a fuck, and are happy to help a fascist government normalize its authoritarian activities and odious ideology by touting the support they receive from respected American corporations; as long as doing so pays off on their bottom line.
There are many reasons for the rise of a successful fascist movement in an America that has always embraced what today we recognize as fascist ideology; trying to pin it down to one specific factor is a fool's errand. But if and when the history of this era is written, I'm willing to bet that rampant greed and a ruling class that lusts for power over the rest of us will rank pretty highly on the list of contributing factors to this political moment.

Finally got my data from Apple but they never sent me an email. Glad I checked the website again.
The annoying thing is if you have large zipped files to download, every 10 minutes I need to acknowledge I am still here or it will end my session. Then I need to download it all over again.

One thing that influenced my decision to use the iPhone with the Apple Watch as my main device instead of the Pixel with GrapheneOS for health reasons is this: I feel absolutely, ABSOLUTELY bad about it!
On the one hand, of course, because of the data protection issue, but since Trump, I also have the problem that most Europeans have: that you are becoming dependent on a big tech company from the US. A country that is clearly drifting toward fascism, where fundamental rights are being undermined by a mentally ill president with the cognitive development of a toddler, where freedom, an independent judiciary, and democracy are being thrown out the window to give free rein to his hubris.
The example of Microsoft and the chief prosecutor in The Hague showed how quickly one can be cut off from US digital services at the snap of the fascist dictator's fingers. Not to mention that these criminals then have access to all of our data as Europeans. Is that worth the accurate recording of my health data for my doctors and therapy? Because if I have this data, then so do the criminals in the US administration.
What's the point of using open source and free software on all your devices if you betray all that on the most personal device there is, the one you carry with you around the clock—your smartphone?
All of this has been keeping me awake at night for days, and I think I'm going to switch back to GrapheneOS. But I had to try it anyway, otherwise I couldn't make an objective decision.
btw: I liked the USA and Americans – but what Trump and MAGA have done to this wonderful country, to the great people there (but also to the rest of the world and former friends and allies) is a crime. Hate, incitement, persecution, megalomania, and lies. And no resistance to the tyrant anywhere. I can't understand it, no decent European understands it... Americans, take a leaf out of the brave Romanians' book in 1989!
