So the latest updates to #MacOS has made #Spotlight into a Safari and file-content all-in-one search box. I no longer can start typing the name of any app (e.g. Bloom, DeltaChat) and be guaranteed that they will show up in the list so I can press return. It means I have to use the mouse more, or discover a magic word in spotlight which isn't obvious. In any case, the regression requires dexterity and sight acuity. I have to mouse to the dock or app folder. What a mess.

This is a case of adding features people don't necessary want while wiping out the features people love to use.

Not saying Windows is better, but macOS has definitely become worse, harder to use, and more difficult from an accessibility standpoint. WTF.

Apple's Photos app has been automatically scanning every face in your photo library since 2016, no consent, no toggle to turn it off, not just for you but for anyone who appears in your pictures, including minors. A federal judge already certified this as a class action covering 6.5 million Illinois residents, and damages could theoretically reach $32.5 billion.

Apple's defense is that the data gets encrypted after it leaves your device, so they claim it's not a stored "biometric identifier," and that not even they can read it. I'm not buying that completely. Companies don't build features like this, with zero opt out and zero toggle, out of pure generosity. If there was truly nothing in it for them, there'd be an off switch. Call me skeptical, but "we can't see it" is a hell of a convenient thing to say about data you built the entire pipeline for.

Facebook paid $650 million and Google paid $100 million for doing this exact thing to their users. That's not a coincidence, that's a pattern.

I have downloaded a picture to my phone... I want to set the picture as a wallpaper on my phones lock screen... to do this, I must add the picture to my photo library where it syncs to the cloud and all my other devices... and pay for the storage, of course.

Why?

I quite like the picture, but I don't need it on all my devices, just the one I downloaded it for... and my TV, which is linked to my photo library, already has nice images that I've taken of holidays or places that I've been and I don't need it showing me funny pictures I've downloaded for my phones lock screen... and the hardest thing to understand is, I used to be able to do this ... the share page had a "set as wallpaper" option for images...

Why is this now so hard?

It's just another reminder that this isn't my phone, it's Apples phone.

In my memory, #Apple was something of an industry leader in terms of bribing journalists with a feeling of deep "access" and tidbits of basically meaningless information, like the internal code-words used for products in development. The public isn't actually learning anything useful just from being informed that Apple or any other #tech corporation has attached a gimmicky name to a product; that code-name is simply another sort of corporate brand or logo, given extra spice by being treated as hot insider "intel" and talked about in the press as if mere code-names were newsworthy.

The tech journalists have fully bought into this racket. Undoubtedly most of them have financial conflicts of interest: they're hoping to profit from the success of tech corporations via #investment.

macOS is so frequently warning me that this or that app I launch will not be functional when Apple sunsets Rosetta 2 and its Ahead-Of-Time compilation, providing x86-64 -> ARM translation in macOS Golden Gate.

On the one hand, yes, this is a hard driver to get developers to update their app to native and, as such, provide higher performance and peak integration into the latest OS.

On the other hand...I've ridden this CPU platform switch train on the Mac long enough (having been here for every one that's happened), that I know many "little" apps that aren't huge moneymakers or maybe aren't any longer maintained will just cease to exist in on the modern Mac platform when this happens, and this saddens me greatly. Some of these apps I use often, even daily.

I neither look forward to nor praise this coming move from Apple.

È questa, secondo la testata giornalistica statunitense Axios, l’accusa che alcune delle più grandi case editrici musicali del mondo hanno intentato contro l’azienda di intelligenza artificiale. Tra queste ci sono anche alcune divisioni di Sony Music e di Warner Music: lo scorso 28 agosto infatti le case discografiche hanno presentato una denuncia al tribunale federale della California settentrionale e hanno citato in giudizio Anthropic, ma anche il suo ceo Dario Amodei e il co-fondatore Benjamin Mann.
Si tratta di una causa di ampia portata dal momento che, secondo Axios, si preannuncia come un antipasto di “una battaglia pluriennale su musica, intelligenza artificiale e tutela della proprietà intellettuale nella nuova era tecnologica”. L’illecito attribuito ad Anthropic – l’azienda celebre per aver sviluppato il chatbot Claude – è di aver addestrato illegalmente i suoi modelli utilizzando migliaia di composizioni protette dal copyright degli editori musicali.
Eppure, per ogni opera musicale protetta da copyright e violata, le case discografiche chiedono fino a centinaia di migliaia di dollari. In questo caso quindi – se l’infrazione dovesse essere confermata – il risarcimento varrebbe miliardi. Ma non è una novità: anche a settembre 2025 Anthropic ha dovuto versare 1,5 miliardi di dollari a ciascuno dei 500 mila autori per aver utilizzato indebitamente più di 7 milioni di opere. Di recente invece OpenAi è stata denunciata da Apple per aver rubato segreti commerciali e proprietà intellettuale per lo sviluppo di hardware Ai assumendo due dei suoi ex dipendenti molto esperti.

Anthropic "has committed one of the largest and most brazen intellectual property thefts in history.” This is, according to the US news outlet Axios, the accusation that some of the world’s biggest music publishing houses have filed a lawsuit against the AI company. Among these are also some divisions of Sony Music and Warner Music: last August 28th, the record labels presented a complaint to the federal court of Northern California and sued Anthropic, as well as its CEO Dario Amodei and co-founder Benjamin Mann.

It is a wide-ranging lawsuit because, according to Axios, it foreshadows “a multi-year battle over music, artificial intelligence, and intellectual property protection in the new technological era.” The offense attributed to Anthropic – the company famous for developing the Claude chatbot – is that it illegally trained its models using thousands of compositions protected by copyright from the music publishers.

Yet, for every copyrighted work infringed upon, the record labels are asking for hundreds of thousands of dollars. In this case therefore – if the infringement were confirmed – the compensation would amount to billions. But it’s not new: as early as September 2025, Anthropic had to pay $1.5 billion each to the 500,000 authors for having improperly used more than 7 million works. Recently instead, OpenAI was denounced by Apple for stealing trade secrets and intellectual property for the development of AI hardware, hiring two of its former very experienced employees.
