Carnist and speciesist assumptions make their way into games in many ways, its almost always more satiating to eat flesh in survival games even when abundant plant sources are available, other animals are often treated as resources or objects even when other resource gathering mechanics are available killing other animals is often the only way to progress.

With alien species, if theyre humanoid theyre usually friendly if theyre non-humanoid especially if theyre spiders centipedes or worms or sometimes other bugs theyre hostile

Also many cozy games portray fishing as relaxing when its literally impaling someones mouth with a hook

Sometimes other animals are even reduced to the point of set dressing and killing them has no benefit or drawback whatsoever and their body disappears in a few seconds

In the pokemon series one of the games antagonists are a non human animal rights group, this was undoubtedly a response to critique of the game being pro exploitation and confinement but it comes accross as them doubling down

These things matter not because simulated animals matter but because normalisation of speciesist assumptions subconsciously affects us and it says something about the values game developers have. Thats not to say that fiction can't have elements of speciesism, fictional worlds can be morally imperfect without narratively framing carnism or speciesism as normal natural and necessary.

🎮⏱️ Starting in November, Xbox Game Pass is killing unlimited cloud gaming. Ultimate drops to 15 hours a month, Premium gets 10, Essential gets just 5. Once you burn through it, you either wait for next month or buy extra hours from the Xbox Store, and Microsoft still hasn't said what that'll cost.

Honestly, I thought "unlimited" meant endless usage, not a capped allowance with a meter running. If it was always going to have a ceiling, don't call it unlimited in the first place. For Ultimate subscribers paying $22.99 a month, 15 hours works out to about 30 minutes a day, barely enough to load into a match before you're out.

What is going on in the gaming world lately, lol. Consoles cost more, digital games apparently aren't "owned," and now unlimited doesn't mean unlimited either.

Steam Machine has arrived and I am so excited to now have a convenient(-er) way to share some of my favorite PC games with my spouse, who enjoys watching games but never liked looking over my shoulder at a computer monitor.

Valve has made great strides in making PC games accessible, but we're still a long way from true game console ease-of-use.

For instance: fired up one of my all-time favorite Valve games this morning only to discover it was so dark as to be effectively unplayable.

Adjust brightness levels? No game setting to do that for... some reason.

Developer console? Doesn't want to launch for... some reason.

Solution? Exit the game, add '-console' to the Launch Options, restart the game, access the developer console, then work through the CLI options to adjust the monitor gamma until things are visible enough to be playable!

Valve has given us a way to play PC games from the 90s and also the experience of playing PC games in the 90's. 😂

I keep seeing criticism of GTA VI based solely on arguments against Lucia and/or her relationship with Jason, and that based solely on what little we've seen so far.

I think, especially if those comments end up being correct, SAVE IT UNTIL THE GAME ACTUALLY DROPS.

I'm a huge fan of criticism of media, just so we're clear.  If something's bad, according to me if no one else, I will call it bad.  I think that is how media should be engaged with; not like this, and it's really interesting how games are engaged with in this way even if other forms of media are not.  From what I've seen, people don't just come out of the woodwork to rip apart some movie, for example, just based on the trailer and before it's even in the theater.

I'm planning on watching people play GTA VI on Twitch/YouTube/wherever as soon as I'm able to, and, again, if I think it looks bad then I'll call it that.  I'll give it a chance to either disappoint me, or not, properly.

I hate that people are already trying to milk it when it's not even out yet.
