Mastodon launches a new project that will "[explore] decentralized search and discovery for the Fediverse".

And it's all very privacy-conscious, which is nice!

@lolgop Mastodon is the better choice because it's federated and therefore not owned by one company or a single person.

Apparently I have a habit of finding out about Fedi projects ahead of time. Causing me to get excited and leak them before they're announced.😅

That's either whoops or hurray!

Still trying to judge which it is.🤣

Posted about BridgyFed before Ryan announced it was live and just found out I posted about sub.club before it was announced officially.

Ya'll not very good at hiding things tbh!

Fediblock: literal psychopath. This is serious. [SENSITIVE CONTENT]

Browsing the federated timeline, I came across this post:

azure-byte-dragon.x10.mx/archi

Reading it yourself, I'm sure you can see why it's quite concerning.

TL, DR: He's a literal psychopath with homicidal ideations and does not hide that. He also posts about wanting to harm people regularly, it seems.😳

They also detailed their suspension from mastodon.social in this post:

azure-byte-dragon.x10.mx/archi

There are other outlandish posts on the blog as well, these are just the two that stand out regarding this person's homicidal ideations.

To each their own, but I don't think it's safe to have someone like that out in the open.

What if he decides that he doesn't like his meds anymore and does something absolutely wild like drive cross country to murder another Fediverse user? Or even if they accidentally skip their meds, with the same result?

This is very concerning and I've blocked them for my own safety.

You should consider your safety as well.

@anderspuck @randahl @potus Huh‽ @threads made opt-in for legal reasons. @wordpressdotcom did the same thing. Both are massive, for-profit corporations who are under a lot of scrutiny.

Turning on sharing as a default option would open to not only potential personal lawsuits, but more wrath from the @EUCommission (which they are trying to avoid right now).

A small compendium of the Fediverse platforms I use/know well.

In the past few days, I revisited some of my old Fediverse instances since some friends asked me to help them set up a new one. I also took the chance to perform maintenance on some leftover instances. Here's my experience:

Akkoma: My oldest instance still running, opened in 2022. It was offline for a few months (3/4). I updated everything to the latest version and restarted it. I’m not sure why, but it’s extremely slow, with a heavy load on Postgres and many queries just to open the main page. I like Akkoma - I'll investigate further.

GoToSocial: I updated a friend's instance - GoToSocial itself was up-to-date, but the underlying system wasn’t. I noticed that once it exceeds 2000 followings, it becomes a bit slow. The database is PostgreSQL, but that's not the issue. The GoToSocial process becomes somewhat heavy on the VPS. Still, it's very usable and a software with great potential, in my opinion. The Mastodon API is implemented quite well and works with the major software.

Mitra: It seems well-built. The person had around 1000 followers and followings on a Mastodon account, which they moved from a large instance. No speed issues, though sending a message makes the server “heavy” for a bit, but it’s temporary. The Mastodon API is partially implemented, but the software is advancing quickly, and I find its native interface quite pleasant.

Snac2: I've always had a soft spot for Snac2. The lack of a database and some design choices make it an excellent solution for small instances. For example, sending posts to all known instances increases visibility and interaction. Its basic, JavaScript-free interface is very clear, though it might not be the best for those used to Mastodon. But the Mastodon API is improving version by version, and I think the developer is doing an excellent job. It struggles a bit with larger numbers, but that's due to the underlying file system, not the software itself. If "move" support (both in and out) were added, I would recommend it to anyone starting self-hosting for single-user or small community instances because "move" is one of the options that gives the most freedom in Fediverse software.

Mastodon: My “old” personal instance was stuck at version 4.1.x and had been offline for a few months. I updated the FreeBSD Jail and upgraded Mastodon to 4.2.12 and then to 4.3.0-beta1. No issues. I also helped a friend (who had an old Pleroma-based instance they barely used) migrate. This user has around 5000 followers and followings - Mastodon is running on FreeBSD on a VPS (arm64) for just over 3 euros a month, with no significant issues (apart from media storage, but that's not Mastodon’s fault). Mastodon is sometimes said to be heavy, and that's partly true, but its modularity ensures that even in cases of overload, queues may slow down, but navigation and the local timeline remain reasonably fast. I think this is a good thing for any larger-scale use of an instance.

In short, I think things are moving in the right direction, and the software is evolving nicely. Well done, devs!

As a single user instance, I'm glad to see something slighly positive from Mastodon finally.

Still no word on better moderation tools for small instances, though.

Maybe someday.

How the whole "open communication across platforms" is going...🤦‍♂️😩

A meme that uses the popular "Gru's Plan" format from Despicable Me, where the character Gru presents his plan on a large board, but it backfires on him in the final panel. In this version, the text on the boards represents the current situation with social media platforms after Elon Musk's changes to Twitter.

The first panel shows Gru proudly presenting the board, which reads: "Musk ruins Twitter."

The second panel has Gru pointing to the next part of his plan, which reads: "Some go to Fediverse."

In the third panel, Gru looks content with the next step in the plan, which reads: "Most go to Threads and BlueSky."

The fourth panel shows Gru staring in disappointment, realizing the backfire of the plan, with the board still reading: "Most go to Threads and BlueSky."

The meme humorously reflects the migration of users from Twitter to alternative platforms like the Fediverse, Threads, and BlueSky after Musk's controversial changes. The joke is that, despite some people embracing the Fediverse, the majority of users end up flocking to centralized platforms like Threads and BlueSky, much to the disappointment of those who might have hoped for a broader adoption of decentralized options like the Fediverse.

@crabstangel welcome to the , friend!

New users typically like to post an , littered with hashtags that are related to their interests so others with similar interests can find easily.

Also, Mastodon isn't the only platform here. There's MANY other softwares with their own uses and interfaces.

Some of those include:

PixelFed, an instagram-like interface.

Peertube, a YouTube-like interface.

Friendica, a facebook-like interface.

WordPress with ActivityPub plugin, full featured blog.

All-in-all, the Fediverse has most social media interfaces that you could want and you just have to decide which would be better for you.

Hope you enjoy it here.

I'm sure it's not massively known quite yet, so I'll mention them again:

There's a Fedi scraper on multiple instances that's been here for about 6 months now. It won't go away.

Search for "Awakari" on your instance and block/report every account with the same profile pic, as a data scraper.

I've posted about them 7 or 8 times now because they've made multiple instances to ban evade. Those instances include Awakari.com, Awakari.app, and Indy.rest

The owner is Akurilov@mastodon.social

Just thought I should keep mentioning them for the new users that haven't blocked them yet, as Mastodon Gmbh seems content with allowing them to operate from their instance.

When discussing BlueSky, it's not entirely correct to say that "everyone is on the same server".

I used to think the same way.

However, I've been informed over time, by very knowledgeable people that it's more complicated than that.

If you're knowledgeable about Fediverse and how the protocol works and are interested in a comparison, I posted a detailed explanation of *my understanding* of how BlueSky works and what I believe are it's shortcomings here:

Did you know that Pleroma, a Fediverse software, has the option to make "followers only" posts that reach their instance, public on their instance if they choose?

They can also automatically deny deletion requests if they want.

It's always important to remember that there's very little privacy on the internet. If you post something, even if it may seem private, always has several ways of going public and existing forever.

Pretty much everything on the internet is public and will not be deleted on request.

Screenshots and internet archive also exist.

If you don't want your post to be seen by most people, don't post it.

You are not safe just because the software or platform you're using says you are.

With coming up next week, we thought we'd give you a little more info on our new service for server admins - Patchwork.

Patchwork servers won't just benefit the admins who run them, but also the people who use them. For example, admins can choose to add complex post types to their server, including:

- Long Posts
- Post Scheduling
- Rich text
- Local Only Posts

We're happy to chat to server admins about what Patchwork can do!

Things are getting different in social media.

X: Probably still my favorite platform but it’s getting worse and worse. At least, my lists and circles are fully functional, the search works quite good and brings me up the desired content. Finding new people gets different and is almost only possible when they commenting things with valuable content. The stream is going in the wrong direction (at least for me), where videos of fights, death or typical “sex sells” posts are shown. But working with communities and lists is still a great way to use it.

Fediverse: Runningm my own instance here for month. Sure no ads, but just a few interactions, finding new content is difficult, using the search is the probably worst experience ever. Sure, an instance cannot have knowledge of all instances in the world but when searching for not even niche content and only finding three posts that are even outdated, this is not useful or a great experience.

Threads: Could have been a great alternative. However, EU accounts do not support Fedi federation and the content is too mainstream in form of the typical Instagram content which is more about “sex sells”.

Blue sky: Anyone really still using it? I haven’t seen anyone anymore there being active.

Nostr: Hm yeah, too nichy.

Conclusion:
X stays on top, because only there I can find and interact content and people. Feediverse is a great alternative when you finally found your matching community where people are sharing your interests, because finding something by the search is just annoying. I can clearly understand why many ones are going back to Twitter/Y.
