I am really enjoying the latest episode of Switched On Pop about the worst pop lyrics through history.

I had no idea people were so offended by John Mellencamp singing "slurpin' on chilli dogs" in Jack and Diane. And I never even noticed that Billy Joel says "tonic and gin" when everybody knows it's "gin and tonic" in Piano Man.

I recorded it on VHS sometime in the late 80s to early 90s - the tape's been long since eaten by the VCR monster. I'm not entirely sure what it is that makes this so memorable, but somehow this has been on the back of my mind for over 30 years. I think it was quite unsuccessful back in the day, but there just is something there...

I know I myself wouldn’t be as well-schooled on his music without Nitvana’s rendition of “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” from their legendary MTV Unplugged performance.

I was such an angry kid; a child of divorce, lonely, disillusioned. A magnificently raw, teenage nerve.

I still love and respect all three of their studio albums, and still can’t figure out how they pulled it off.
They were a band that used their music as a vehicle for their politics. The politics came FIRST. It was not the other way around. And somehow, they became HUGE with that blueprint. Quite an incredible thing.

They were a greatest entity than the sum of their individual parts. Tom Morello’s crazy-ass guitar playing remains criminally underrated.

This will always be my favorite record of theirs.

It took me finding a used copy out in California to finally give it a try. And what I’ve found is a weird, dumb curiosity of a record.

Apparently, the label mixed it in a more fashion (the band was not there), and chose not to include grooves in between the songs (an odd choice indeed). Add on top of that a band that was ZOOTED on copious amounts of drugs during recording, and you kinda get why this album is so off kilter and wildly uneven.

“Bird Song” did eventually make it into the film Easy Rider, per Peter Fonda’s request, and they’d go on to open for Pink Floyd.

                                                                                                                      Odd little record.

It shows how gatekeepers and managers often begin as supposed allies, only to turn into parasites that demand obedience. Resistance becomes irrelevant, silence and compliance become the only thing that matters to them. By the end, the music the band once owned has been taken, molded, and repackaged to keep the spotlight right where the manager wants it. It is not simply a battle over songs but over identity. The film might glitter with cosmic lights, but at its core, it is about the quiet cruelty of exploitation and how easily dreams can be reshaped into something unrecognizable.

They showed me how this was not some distant sci-fi tale but an allegory for what actually happens to artists. At first, the relationship between band and manager looks almost balanced. There is a promise of mutual benefit, a sense of working together. But over time, the balance shifts. The manager demands changes, reshapes the band into something more marketable, and strips away their voice. Because of the contract, the band cannot refuse. If they try, they lose any chance at survival in the world they have been forced into.

It was like watching the curtain get pulled back on a system that was set against artists from the start. Beneath the colors and music was something darker, a story about gifted beings who create from the heart, only to be trapped in contracts that take away more than they give. It is not just a bad deal on paper, it is a slow rewiring of who they are, until their purpose stops being expression and becomes a product. Earl de Darkwood is not just a villain for the sake of the plot, he is the embodiment of an industry that shapes, controls, and drains its talent until there is nothing left but what can be sold. And once that value has been extracted, they are discarded without hesitation, like the scene where they plunge into lava after delivering the golden record.

And now I cannot get it out of my head that it has some really weird geography descriptors.

what the hell is happening in Eastern Maine that the smooth operator is only operating in Western Maine? A quick look at the map shows that there are basically no cities at all in Western Maine- so that's a strange place to be.

A quick look at a lyric site seems to think that the line is western male and not western Maine. I guess that makes slightly more sense, especially since he considers Chicago a coast and he only goes back-and-forth between LA and there.

but then she starts mentioning Key Largo, which is distinctly further east than Chicago.

this song is breaking my brain, and I am still not convinced that that line is western male. 🤣

I felt (and still do) that they were one of the most overrated bands ever, with a circus clown for a frontman.

It wasn’t until Porno For Pyros that I gained ANY respect for Perry Farrell musically, and even the PFP albums on whole weren’t that great for me, though I dug the singles.

I found this in a used bin out in L.A., and figured I should grab it for those handful of songs I like; “Pets”, “Tahitian Moon”, and “Cursed Female” being the main attractions for me.

                                                                                                                                                                          Now, the bad:

I can do without the Lou Reed cover here, and the techno-y electronic Daniel Avery remix of “Pets” is terrible. And the best thing I can say about the three new songs is that they’re average at best.

Essentially, I paid $12 for 3 songs I really like.
