The other title from this RSD that I really wanted, and was happy to receive early.

Back in 1991, I heard the song “The City Sleeps” on the radio on WBRU.

I was instantly captivated by it, and it took me a long time after that to find it on CD. We’re talking almost a whole year.

Once I got it, I was fully immersed in it for months.
It’s a great hip-hop album with killer instrumentation; sometimes jazzy, sometimes spooky, sometimes just old school sounding hiphop.

They did a great job on this reissue, and the remixes and expanded material is quite interesting.

A horribly under appreciated artist, and a great album.

Got ALL of my RSD stuff early, with THIS being the crown jewel.

Some of the “brownest” Ween ever, and for ANY disciple of Gene, Dean AND Boognish, this is pure gold.
Pure. BROWN. Gold.

For me, it’s worth having for the long lost studio sessions recorded in Eindhoven, which has an incredible “Albino Sunburn Girl” and a dope version of “Push th’ Little Daisies”.

According to Dean, the “Live in Basel 1990” portion of this is the best Ween show of all time.
They played in front of one person (their manager) for the majority of the gig, and by the end, there were five.

That’s progress, bro.

Today’s workday: taught a couple Alexander technique students. Then practised some (about a million it felt like) hymns for a church service next Sunday. In Dutch. Then a recorder lesson and one more AT-lesson. After dinner rushed through two parts of Mozart op35 on bassoon, just before the recorder group arrived to practise for tomorrow’s students’ concert. It was not a boring day!

A SUPER obscure but wonderful #folk record gets last spin of the night.

I can’t remember where I found this, but I’ve had it for close to two decades, and every time I throw it on, I fall in love with it all over again.

A private press record, it came long before what Larry Towell was most remembered for: being a dope photographer for the international agency Magnum Photos.

Musically, it is very much of the stark, acoustic guitar driven lo-fi folk tradition. It’s produced very sparsely; most likely recorded on limited (or sub-par) equipment, probably at a house or in a basement.

There is ZERO gloss about this album; more an off-the-cuff document than an album made for product or industry. And it’s in THAT I think where it’s magic comes from.

Larry’s vocals are intimate and subdued, and you just feel like you’re in the room with the guy.

Continuing with the odd and unusual tonight.

A very loud and noisy experiment in resonance, and one of the greatest #experimental #artrock albums of all time.

The album is a study in alternate guitar tunings, and the resonances that are generated by those tunings by MULTIPLE guitars.

It was universally acclaimed by just about everybody in 1981, but that didn’t help sell any records or get Glenn signed by anyone that could help the album penetrate the mainframe.

Four guitarists, one bass player, one drummer, one of those guitarists being Lee Renaldo, who would later go on to join Sonic Youth.

Repeated harmonics, overtones from excessive feedback, and dense sonic landscapes that do a very good job of putting across what (supposedly) his live shows were like.
Loud and powerful.

And a great sounding reissue by Superior Viaduct.

I've recited this poem by heart for my British English professor, she was so blown away that I got the highest Mark she has ever given in her career of 30 years

The poem tells of the mariner stopping a man who is on his way to a wedding ceremony so that the mariner can share his story. The Wedding-Guest's reaction turns from amusement to impatience to fear to fascination as the mariner's story progresses, as can be seen in the language style; Coleridge uses narrative techniques such as personification and repetition to create a sense of danger, the supernatural, or serenity, depending on the mood in different parts of the poem.

The Rime is Coleridge's longest major poem.[2] It is often considered a signal shift to modern poetry and the beginning of British Romantic literature.[3]

A deeply sentimental favorite.

I was in desperate need of a few laughs today, so this was a no brainer, seeing that it has never once failed to make me smile or laugh.

Not only is this shit FUNNY, but there’s great songcraft going on here, with some vibes that are reminiscent of Randy Newman and early Tom Waits.

Martin Mull was a comedic genius, a great actor, and criminally underrated.

His Johnny Carson appearances were fucking GREAT, and everything Martin was in was made better for having him in it.

It was a sad day for me when he died.
